Location

Dhaka, Bangladesh

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, which is one of the poorest countries in the world, is also the most crowded city in the world. It is estimated that 2,000 people migrate to Dhaka every day from rural areas. Dhaka is located in the central part of the country, and it is the center of politics, commerce, industry, culture, and education. Dhaka is facing many problems such as pollution, traffic congestion and lack of public services due to population growth.

Issue

Increase of climate refugees

Due to its geographical features, Bangladesh is a country that has suffered from flooding over the past years. The country has also experienced frequent large-scale cyclones, which have caused many deaths and have had a tremendous impact on the people of this agricultural country. Those who have lost their houses and livelihoods due to these natural disasters migrate to Dhaka, where they do not have the choice but to work as informal laborers, creating a vicious cycle.

Solution / Lesson learned

Climate fund for improving people’s livelihood

The Climate Bridge Fund was established to improve the livelihoods of people who have migrated to Dhaka due to climate change impacts. The target of this fund is to support non-governmental organizations to implement small-scale projects so that these projects can support immigrants to strengthen their resilience in order to prevent them from migrating into major cities like Dhaka. Climate Bridge Fund is particularly focused on working in the slum areas of Dhaka to help climate refugees.
