About Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia is an island country in Oceania, comprised of four main islands. It is a small country with a population of about 110,000 in total. The main industries are fisheries, tourism, and agriculture (coconuts, taro, bananas, etc.). The country is also rich in marine resources such as coral reefs and mangrove forests. As a developing country, Micronesia is economically dependent on the United States, receiving economical support.

Effects of sea level rise

Since Micronesia is a small island developing country, it is extremely vulnerable to sea level rise caused by long-term global warming. In fact, the sea level in some parts of Micronesia has risen by 10-12mm each year between 1993 and 2012, and water levels are rising much faster than the global average.

 

Solution / Lesson learned

Project for conserving Micronesia

Several projects are on the way which is funded by the Micronesia Conservation Trust to support this vulnerable country to conserve ecosystems. These projects focus on strengthening the capacity of marine resource management, making guidelines for fisheries management, strengthening the capacity of pacific islands' marine protected areas community, strengthening the capacity of watershed management, and so on. Many projects are being undertaken in response to Micronesia's status as an island nation and the severe damage caused by sea level rise, which is already showing results in strengthening the adaptive capacity of its people.
